The Giants walloped the Seahawks this Sunday by one of the highest regular season margins. The Giants are looking hot after the first 5 games of the season. Are we looking at another Superbowl berth? If they stay on this course we may very well see that. The New York Times review of the game…

From: NYT -By JOE LAPOINTE

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — With a quarter of their regular season complete, the Super Bowl champion Giants remain undefeated, their latest triumph a remarkably one-sided 44-6 victory against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Giants Stadium.

Few had predicted such a dominant result. Could it be that the Giants’ championship last winter was not a fluke? Might they be as good as or even better than the Dallas Cowboys, the trendy preseason pick as the team to beat in the National Football Conference?

More will be learned as the Giants’ schedule becomes more challenging, with 5 of their final 12 games against rivals, including the Cowboys, from the N.F.C. East, possibly the league’s most competitive division.

But Sunday’s game could have been a difficult one for the Giants. Coming off a bye week, they were without the star wide receiver Plaxico Burress (suspension) and lost Domenik Hixon and Kareem McKenzie in the first half with concussions.

Nevertheless, their margin of victory was their largest in the regular season since a 62-10 victory against Philadelphia on Nov. 26, 1972. This is the first time the Giants have started 4-0 since 1990, when they started 10-0 and won the Super Bowl. Tennessee is the only other undefeated team, improving to 5-0 with a victory against Baltimore. Full story here...

Oct 04, 2008 – The Denver Broncos were 7-4 in the latter part of the 2006 season when they chose to insert rookie quarterback Jay Cutler into the starting lineup, apparently hastening the surprise retirement of Jake Plummer at the end of the year.

The Broncos had lost their previous two games under Plummer, but the move was considered a surprising one for a team solidly in playoff contention. Denver’s coaching staff clearly believed it had something special in the former Vanderbilt star.

But Cutler did throw nine touchdown passes in that span, posting the highest touchdown percentage of any rookie passer in league history not named Dan Marino.

In 2007, Cutler started all 16 games and threw for 20 touchdowns, nearly 3,500 yards and a passer rating of 88.1. Those numbers were solid; this year he has been spectacular. Through the first month of his third NFL campaign, Cutler has thrown for 1,275 yards and nine touchdowns. He currently ranks first in the NFL in attempts (157), second in completions (102), second in yards, fourth in touchdown percentage (5.73%) and sixth in average gain per pass attempt (8.12).

The Dolphins, who lost their first 13 games last year and finished 1-15, won for just the second time in 22 games. Brown gained 113 yards on the ground, while Ricky Williams picked up 98 more.

Both New England (2-1) and Miami (1-2) have changed dramatically since last season.

New England starting quarterback Tom Brady was lost for the year with a knee injury in the team’s first game of the season, while Dolphins signal-caller Chad Pennington is one of 27 Miami players who was not on the team at the end of the 2007 campaign.

Pennington completed 17 of 20 passes for 226 yards to give coach Tony Sparano his first NFL win. Matt Cassel struggled in his second start for New England, throwing for just 131 yards, with one touchdown and an interception.

The New York Giants, Buffalo, Tennessee, Denver and Baltimore remained unbeaten on Sunday. In other NFL action:

Giants 26, Bengals 23 (OT)

The New York Giants are off to their best start since 2000 after John Carney kicked a 22-yard field goal with 8:39 left in overtime to lift the Super Bowl champions to a 26-23 victory over the visiting Cincinnati Bengals.

The win was not without controversy, however.

The play that set up 44-year-old Carney’s heroics saw Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning connect on a 31-yard passing play with Amani Toomer down the sideline.

It appeared that Toomer kept his feet in bounds, but the Giants ran the next play before it could be reviewed by video.

The Bengals are 0-3 despite 286 passing yards and the first touchdown throw of the season from Carson Palmer. Giants tickets and Bengals tickets.

Bills 24, Raiders 23

In Buffalo, the Bills improved to 3-0 with a 24-23 comeback win over the Oakland Raiders.

Rian Lindell connected on a 38-yard field goal as the clock ran out. Trent Edwards engineered three scoring drives in the final quarter for a Buffalo team that is off to its first 3-0 start since 1992.

Lindell, who missed an earlier kick from 46 out, has made 42 consecutive field goals from inside 40 yards.

Edwards completed 24 of 39 passes for 279 yards and a touchdown.

Sunday’s loss could spell trouble for Raiders coach Lane Kiffin, who is on the hot seat after Oakland (1-2) began the season with a 41-14 loss to Denver.

Kiffin has clashed with both owner Al Davis and defensive co-ordinator Rob Ryan, whose charges let him down late in the fourth. Best deals on Bills tickets and Raiders tickets.

Titans 31, Texans 12

LenDale White ran for two touchdowns and Kerry Collins threw for another as the Tennessee Titans rolled over the Houston Texans 31-12 at home.

The win allowed the Titans to improve to 3-0 for only the third time in franchise history.

During the game, Collins became the 15th quarterback in NFL history with 35,000 yards passing in his career. Among active quarterbacks, only Brett Favre and Peyton Manning have thrown for more yards.

The Texans (0-2) led 3-0 on a 44-yard field goal by Kris Brown before the Titans’ defence took over, sacking Matt Schaub three times and registering three interceptions, including one for a 99-yard touchdown return.

Steve Slaton made his first NFL start at running back for the Texans, gaining 116 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

Broncos 34, Saints 32

Denver (3-0) prevailed in another shootout as Jay Cutler threw touchdowns to Nate Jackson and Brandon Marshall, with Nate Webster returning a Reggie Bush fumble 34 yards for a major.

The Broncos lead the NFL with 114 points after three games.

New Orleans (1-2) lost despite 421 passing yards from Drew Brees. The Saints rallied from 18 points down to 34-32 with a Pierre Thomas touchdown run, but they missed the two-point conversion attempt and Martin Grammatica missed the second of three field goal tries, from 42 yards out, with under two minutes left. Best deals on Broncos and Saints tickets.

Ravens 28, Browns 10

Baltimore (2-0) played for the first time in two weeks after a postponed game in Houston due to Hurricane Ike. The Ravens scored three touchdowns in the third quarter, on two short LaRon McClain runs and Ed Reed’s 32-yard return of a Derek Anderson interception.

Anderson, who threw 29 touchdowns last season, has just two this season, with five interceptions. Cleveland is 0-3. Ravens tickets and Browns tickets.

Jaguars 23, Colts 21

Josh Scobee kicked a 51-yard field goal with four seconds left to give Jacksonville a huge road win in Indianapolis.

Scobee’s kick came just over a minute after Joseph Addai rushed for his second touchdown to put Indianapolis ahead. Fred Taylor gained 121 yards rushing, with Maurice Jones-Drew adding 107.

Both teams are 1-2. The Colts have yet to win at the Lucas Oil Stadium, their new digs.

Eagles 15, Steelers 6

Just six days after allowing 41 points to Dallas, Philadelphia responded by recording nine sacks and limiting Pittsburgh to 180 yards of total offence.

Cornell Buckhalter scored the game’s only touchdown, a 20-yard pass from Donovan McNabb. Eagles star running back Brian Westbrook left in the second quarter with an apparent ankle injury.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger injured his thumb in the fourth, with backup Byron Leftwitch unsuccessfully trying to rally the Steelers late in the game.

Both clubs are 2-1. Trent Cole and the Philadelphia Eagles pounded Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger all game. (Tom Mihalek/Associated Press)

49ers 31, Lions 10

J.T. O’Sullivan had a second consecutive solid outing, throwing touchdown passes to Isaac Bruce and Delanie Walker to push San Francisco to 2-1.

Rudi Johnson gained 83 yards rushing and scored on a 34-yard pass reception for Detroit (0-3). The Lions have given up 113 points already this season.

Redskins 24, Cardinals 17

Leigh Torrence’s heads-up play helped the Washington Redskins defeat the visiting Arizona Cardinals.

With the Cardinals driving late in the fourth quarter, Torrence reached over Steve Breaston’s shoulder to get a hand on Kurt Warner’s pass. After deflecting the pass, teammate Carlos Rogers grabbed the ball just before it hit the ground and carried it down to Arizona’s 15-yard line.

Two plays later, receiver Santana Moss caught a 17-yard touchdown pass to lift the Redskins (2-1) to victory. Quarterback Jason Campbell has thrown four touchdowns and no interceptions so far this season.

The Cardinals (2-1) were attempting to go 3-0 for the first time since the 1974 season.

Buccaneers 27, Bears 24 (OT)

In Chicago, Tampa Bay quarterback Brian Griese threw a 38-yard pass to Antonio Bryant, paving the way for Matt Bryant’s winning 21-yard field goal in the Buccaneers’ 20-17 overtime win over the Bears.

Griese engineered a 79-yard touchdown drive for the Bucs (1-1) that was capped when he hit Jerramy Stevens on a one-yard touchdown pass in the closing seconds of regulation.

Griese threw a whopping 67 pass attempts, the fifth most in league history, and atoned for three interceptions.

The Bears (1-2) seemed to be on their way to the victory, going up 24-14 on Kyle Orton passes to Brandon Lloyd and Matt Forte, but couldn’t hold the lead in the fourth quarter.

Falcons 38, Chiefs 14

In Atlanta, Michael Turner ran for three touchdowns in the Falcons’ win over the visiting Chiefs.

Turner registered his first game with three rushing touchdowns while leading the Falcons (2-1) with 104 yards on the ground. He also moved into the NFL rushing lead, with 366 yards.

Kansas City (0-3) started Tyler Thigpen — the team’s third starting quarterback in as many weeks — and he threw a trio of interceptions.

Vikings 20, Panthers 10

In Minneapolis, Antoine Winfield’s sack of Jake Delhomme and 19-yard fumble return for a touchdown just before halftime helped the Vikings beat the Carolina Panthers.

Veteran Gus Frerotte completed 16 of 28 passes for 204 yards and threw one touchdown for Minnesota (1-2). Frerotte was named starter earlier in the week, replacing ineffective Tarvaris Jackson.

The Panthers fell to 2-1.

Seahawks 37, Rams 13

Seattle gained 245 yards rushing to win its first game in three tries this season, defeating the hapless Rams (0-3). Julius Jones scored a touchdown and gained 140 yards, with T.J. Duckett taking two runs in for scores.

St. Louis have given up a league-worst 116 points this season. Its lone touchdown came on a Marc Bulger pass to Dane Looker to make the score 27-13, but the Rams could get no closer.
